During the course of his 30-year career, Clive has been fortunate to have extensively traveled and worked in South Africa, Mauritius, across most of the African continent, the Middle East as well as many other parts of the world. Primarily being a strategist and business developer, Clive's specialised Africa experience in more than 22 African markets has provided him a unique opportunity in developing a network of relationships which has been an invaluable asset in expanding business across the continent (this includes South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, Mozambique, Mauritius, Namibia, Angola, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Madagascar, Seychelles, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Ghana, Cote D’Ivoire and Burkina Faso).
His stakeholder-centric approach is key to his strategy of building long-term sustainable partnerships which he has successfully employed servicing customers in the Construction, Engineering, Utilities, Production, Manufacturing, Mining, Information Technology (ICT), Transportation, State-Owned Enterprises as well as National and Provincial Government departments in both South Africa and the rest of the continent.
Clive has an uncompromising drive for performance combined with a proven track record for building and leading performance-oriented companies and teams. Being an effective manager is just one of Clive's strengths, he has also had the opportunity to be an entrepreneur starting and running his own businesses and has developed a deeper insight and appreciation into the challenges start-up businesses face.
With combined board experience of more than 37 years and being a champion for good Corporate Citizenship, Clive values qualities of ethical leadership including integrity, competence, responsibility, accountability, fairness and transparency. His sole purpose and passion is to add value to the boards of the organisations he serves, not only through the diverse experience he has gained, or the networks and relationships cultivated, but through the entrenchment of innovation and ethics as part of the organisational culture. As an internationally accredited and qualified director, Clive is an advocate of the proportional application of the corporate governance principles beyond mere legal compliance. Clive's philosophy is that as independent directors, it is our duty to assist boards realise the value of being a good corporate citizen instead of seeing corporate governance as a cost and administrative burden. In addition to his board-level contributions, Clive has experience serving on both the Audit and Risk Committee focusing on combined assurance, risk management and integrated reporting as well as the Social and Ethics Committee focusing on stakeholder inclusivity and ingraining an ethical organisational culture.
In his experience, board dynamics is predicated on a culture fit, and does not expect that this will occur every time. Clive has chosen to focus on organisations of substance that are committed to good governance, ethical leadership and sustainable development and only accept board appointments where there is a culture fit. A dysfunctional board serves no benefit to shareholders and other stakeholders, Clive always says that he is not naive seeking the ideal but the aspiration to do better. He also has a clear understanding of the separation of roles and responsibilities between management being executors and implementers of strategy and the board of directors acting as agents of the shareholders and guardians of all stakeholders. Clive sees his value-adding contributions to the board being:
